Season 1. Concert 8. Celebrate the release of Yoni Battat’s new album, “Fragments.”

Celebrating the release of his upcoming album, “Fragments,” Yoni Battat shares a collection of original and traditional melodies surrounding his Iraqi-Jewish identity. With lyrics in Arabic, Hebrew and English, the music utilizes Arabic modes and rhythms with an ensemble of traditional Arabic instruments. Gathering the broken pieces of his fragmented identity, Yoni conjures the senses to fill in the gaps in memory with the richness of music and imagination.

Yoni Battat is a Boston-based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and teacher, specializing in contemporary and traditional Jewish music from Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Yoni’s Judaism is deeply rooted in both his Iraqi and Polish ancestry, and especially the rich musical traditions that come from these cultures. He delights in sharing traditional melodies alongside his own original music, inspired and informed by the Ashkenazi and Mizrahi music of generations past. In doing so, Yoni invites listeners to indulge in the oneness of past and future, and experience the heart-connection and deep spirituality of sharing a musical moment together.

Yoni is a classically trained violist, with a Bachelor’s from Brandeis University and Master’s from Boston University. Since completing his degrees, he has appeared with several orchestras and chamber ensembles, such as the New Haven Symphony, Boston Philharmonic, Juventas Ensemble, and ALEA III. Yoni is also the core violist of VSNY, a mixed chamber group that performs new works alongside celebrated masterpieces. Attracting a diverse audience base, VSNY has received high praise for their casual and accessible concert environment, and their exciting programming. The group has toured extensively in Italy and Portugal, premiering new works by Italian, Portuguese, and American composers. Yoni has helped the ensemble develop and execute a series of highly successful educational programs in Massachusetts schools and at the Bendada Music Festival in Portugal. In 2018, VSNY released “Catalogus Galilei,” a complete album of music by Italian Composer Mario Pagotto, issued on Italian label MEP for international distribution.
