The Boston Festival of New Jewish Music is a free monthly concert series presenting original music drawing from the Jewish cultural experience and highlights the best in Jewish-influenced music by composers and performers who live right here in our own backyard.

Season 1. Concert 9. Join us for the premiere of clarinetist and composer Nat Seelen’s song cycle, “The Wedding | Di Khassene”

“The Wedding | Di Khassene” is a mixed-media song cycle co-created with and featuring the voices and stories of a group of seniors who have been living in Jewish senior housing facilities in the Boston area during the COVID-19 pandemic. It uses the musical language of klezmer and the formal structure of the traditional Jewish wedding to bring their memories to life within the context of a ritual of renewal and togetherness.

Nat Seelen is a performer, composer, educator, and researcher specializing in klezmer music. As a founding member of Ezekiel’s Wheels Klezmer Band, Nat has performed at venues including the Kennedy Center, Rockport Music, and the International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam, where he won the Audience Choice Award and the City Winery Award for Best Klezmer Band. His compositions have won first prizes at the IMJ Brasil Kleztival Bubbe Awards and the Klezmer Company Orchestra Composition Competition.

Nat is a teaching artist for Young Audiences of Massachusetts, leads an active online studio, and has presented his research on improvisation in klezmer music at regional, national, and international conferences.

Currently, Nat serves as clarinetist for Ezekiel’s Wheels Klezmer Band and as artistic director and founder of the Boston Festival of New Jewish Music.
